Arkansas Legal Writing Style Preferences

Adapted from the Arkansas Bureau of Legislative Research Drafting Manual

The Bureau of Legislative Research in Arkansas has compiled a style manual for drafting new legislation and amendments to established laws. However, these guidelines can also be applied to other documents written by legislators, lawyers, paralegals, secretaries, and other legal professionals within the state.

The grammar review is beneficial for any legal professional outside the state of Arkansas. The grammar topics covered include the most common errors found in professional writing of all types, not just legal writing. Since good writing starts with good grammar, mastering these issues will sharpen your general writing skills. However, the Arkansas Bureau of Legislative Research specifically cited these grammar concerns in its style guide.

Because some usage and style preferences veer from standard grammar and business writing rules, these topics have been labeled with the AR-BLR prefix. The lessons on numbers, usage errors, capitalization, and punctuation include rules that are very specific to the Arkansas BLR's style guide. At the end of the class, students can download a 21-page quick reference guide that highlights what to delete and avoid in general legal writing, not just legislation.

As a result of taking this class, you will:

  • Identify and correct common grammar errors.
  • Sharpen your legal writing skills.
  • Write clear, plain English sentences.
  • Understand legal writing preferences in the state of Arkansas.
  • Learn from a dynamic college English instructor and current legal editor with over 20 years’ experience who has recently published six books on grammar and proofreading, and also actively freelances as a writer and editor.
